Eugene Ware Dunn, 92, of Solon, formerly of Marion, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at his home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion and one hour before the service at the church. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at Faith Lutheran Church in Marion by Pastor John Albertson. Private family burial will be at a later date at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Wears of Solon; daughter-in-law, Jean Dunn of Marion; his children, Linda (Wayne) Blackford, Louan (Jim) Handke, Lance (Karen) Dunn and Lisa Hoffmann, all of Marion; stepchildren, Penny Tompkins of Solon, Bonnie Willoughby of West Branch, Wendy Wears of Solon and Brent (Donna) Wears of Solon; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth Ann Dunn; two brothers, Leonard Dunn and Richard Ware; and a son, Lynn.
Eugene was born Nov. 9, 1924, the son of Leslie and Eulalia (Ware) Dunn, at home north of Anamosa. He graduated from Marion High School in 1942 and attended Iowa State University. Eugene served with the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He was in the 9th Infantry Division in Germany. Eugene farmed for 25 years and later was in real estate sales, construction and development in Marion for 20 years. He first married Ruth Ann Pech on March 6, 1949. She died July 28, 2002. Eugene then married Irene (Jedlicka) Wears on Aug. 2, 2003, in Marion.
He was a member of American Legion Post 298 of Marion and charter member of Faith Lutheran Church and also attended Solon United Methodist Church.
Eugene enjoyed traveling, especially cruises and bus trips, and coffee with friends, and most of all, loved his family.
Memorials may be made in Eugene's memory to Faith Lutheran Church, Solon United Methodist Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
