EUGENE "GENE" DIVOKY
Cedar Rapids
Eugene J. "Gene" Divoky, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 4, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, officiated by Cedar Memorial Certified Staff Celebrant Jim Parton. Visitation will take place from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entomb-ment, with military honors, will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Gene was born March 5, 1929, in Saline County, Neb., to James J. and Sylvia Divoky. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was united in marriage to J. LaVon Kinney on July 30, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union, four daughters were born.
Gene was self-employed for most of his working career as an electronics engineer. He later worked at KCRG as an engineer. He was involved in many professional electronics organizations throughout his career.
He enjoyed traveling with his family; he and LaVon wintered in Scottsdale, Ariz., for many years. Together, Gene and LaVon enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races; they especially loved cheering for Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. They also enjoyed attending local stock car races. Gene was a lifelong learner, and loved to tinker with electronics. If it was fixable, Gene could fix it.
He enjoyed Czech music, and played the accordion as a young man. Gene was extremely proud of his Czech heritage.
He will be missed by all who loved him.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, LaVon; daughters, Susan (Ron) Wyse of Mount Pleasant, Nancy Divoky of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Jerry) Richards of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Sandra "Sandy" (Marvin) Kurth of Cedar Rapids; as well as four grandchildren, Stephanie, Sierra, Robert and Dustin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials in Gene's honor may be made to the VFW.
