Ethel Margaret (Ackerman) Winger, age 72, Cedar Rapids, IA, died on January 1st, 2024.
A celebration-of-life party will be held on Friday, January 5th from 3-7 PM at the VFW on 3240 Southgate Pl. SW, Cedar Rapids.
A memorial service will be held later this summer at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic church in Hiawatha, Iowa.
A private celebration will occur in July at her and Denny’s cabin on Lake Delhi, her happy place, when her cremated remains will go for her final boat ride.
She was born on Jan. 29, 1951, to Harry G. and Clara (Vangsnes) Ackerman in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Kennedy H.S. in 1969.
She met the love of her life, Denny Winger, in 1971, and they were married Sept. 1973. A 50th anniversary family vacation was taken in July 2023 in eastern Tennessee with all 18 family members and many great memories were made.
Ethel worked various office-related jobs in her life, but her favorite “job” was that of wife and mother.
She is survived by her mother, Clara of Cedar Rapids; her husband, Dennis of Cedar Rapids; sons: David (Julie Steinbron) of Lake Delhi, Doug (various lady friends) of West Des Moines, Dan (Shantel) of Apex, NC, and Derek (Meagan) of Cape Coral, FL, and a son-by-another-mother, Pedro Bacelar (and his family) of Recife, Brazil; eight grandchildren: Jacob, Megan, Lindsey, Ava, Cedar, Amelia, Elwood, and Forest; one soon-to-arrive great-grandson; brothers: Terry Ackerman (Janell, deceased), Dave Ackerman (Karen); sister Dixie Newbigging (Rod); brother-in-laws: Jerry (Mary), Terry (Denise), Richard (Ann); and sister-in-law Cindy Westphal (Doug). Also surviving are her many friends and “prayer warriors.” (You know who you are, and all are much loved.)
Preceding her in death were her father, Harry Ackerman; her mother-in-law and father-in-law (Marjorie and Marvin Winger); sister-in-law, Janell Ackerman; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
