Esther "Virginia" Reding, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 6, 2014, at West Ridge Care Center following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 4 until 6:30 p.m, followed by a vigil service and rosary at Teahen Funeral Home. Friends may also visit with the family on Wednesday after 10 a.m. at the church.
Survivors include her children, Janet (Francis) Douglas of Cedar Rapids, John E. (Donna) Reding of Mason City, Jocile "Jo" Davies of Cedar Rapids, Jerri (Roger) Dix of New Braunfels, Texas, and Joyce Ruckebeil Taylor of Coralville; 18 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Jean Becker; granddaughter, Sarah Reding; brothers, Don and Hank; and sister, Ellen Matus.
Esther Virginia was born July 6, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Herman August and Nora Esther Valliere Merklin. She married John G. Reding Jr. on July 15, 1943, in Cedar Rapids. She worked as a beautician for Maybelline Beauty Salon for 30 years, retiring in 1972.
Virginia was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, St. Anthony Study, St. Agnes Circle and many card clubs.
