ERNEST TIPPIE
Cedar Rapids
Ernest Tippie, 85, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, at The Meth-Wick Community/Meth-Wick Manor in Cedar Rapids.
Ernest was born to Robert W. and Amelia Bokholt Tippie on June 21, 1931, in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He had three brothers, Henry, Robert, and one who died at birth. After graduating from Belle Plaine High School, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He served for over five years in the U.S., Germany and England.
On Sept. 25, 1952, he married Margaret Hazen at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. They settled in Cedar Rapids, where he was employed by Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. He retired from that company after a career of 43 years. He was in the operating department for many years and manager for 10 years. He then moved to the new economic development area and traveled very extensively for eight years. He traveled for IE in Europe, Korea, Japan and China. He made many friends all over the world and was an exceptional representative for both IE and the state of Iowa.
Ernie and Margaret had four children, Daniel, Mark, Matthew and Susan, who all attended Kennedy High School and the University of Northern Iowa. They had 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Ernie took great pride in his family, his work and the state of Iowa. He was a charter member of St. Pius Catholic Church. He was a Paul Harris Scholar and a member of Rotary for about 30 years. He was a founding board member of the Belle Plaine Area Museum.
He and Margaret enjoyed wintering in Palm Springs, Calif., for 15 years and enjoyed much traveling in retirement.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret; three sons, Daniel (Carol) Tippie of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mark (Denise) Tippie of Reno, Nev., and Matthew (Linda) Tippie of St. Joseph, Mo.; daughter, Susan (Ken) Bartos of Hudson, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Dan and Ben Tippie, Jessica Hunter, Allyson Rameker, Samantha and Nathan Tippie, Heather McAnally, Amanda Tippie, Megan and Lauren Bartos; nine great-grandchildren, Addison, Hayden and Storey Hunter, Xion and Brock Tippie, Oliver and Alila Rameker, and Brady and Logan McAnally; and brother, Henry (Patricia) Tippie of Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert John Tippie.
Ernie was truly a "people person" and will be missed by many.
Service is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Belle Plaine, with Father Mike Mescher and Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Military honors will follow. There will be a private family burial at a later date. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service in Belle Plaine, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Belle Plaine Area Museum.
