Ernie was born Oct. 2, 1930. He was the son of Elsie and Emery Hines (Madison, S.D.) and one of 10 children. Ernie and the love of his life, Joan Kish, have been married for 66 years and proudly raised three sons, Steve, Russ (Patty) and Tony. Ernie was adored by his six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
In Ernie's youth he played and excelled in many sports and continued to enjoy watching and cheering on his sons and grandchildren. He was very proud to have served in the National Guard. Ernie and Joan moved to Cedar Rapids in 1951 to work for Collins Radio and he retired in 1985 after 34 years. After retiring, they traveled the U.S. visiting with and helping his many nieces and nephews.
Ernie was a builder of many beautiful homes, hand- crafted clocks and furniture through his love of woodworking.
His kind spirit, great stories and big smile will be missed by many.
