Ernest "Ernie" Shoemaker, 80, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Ernie was born Jan. 13, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Earl and Oda (Woodruff) Shoemaker. Ernie married his wife Velma Scholl, on May 29, 1955, in Nebraska. In 1956, he began to serve his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. He worked at a rock quarry in Nebraska and later became a diesel mechanic at Hawkeye International Trucking. Ernie enjoyed working on stock cars and he loved to go fishing. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan and also a proud member of American Legion Post 671, Swisher, Iowa.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Velma; children, Robert (Cody) Shoemaker of Marengo, Iowa, and Harold (Jennifer) Shoemaker of Cedar Rapids; grandkids, Gena, Heather, Amber and Zachary; great-grandkids, Leah, Spencer, Sterling, Nathan and Ethan; and siblings, Charlotte (Charles) Wagner of Tecumseh, Neb., and Harold (Ann) Shoemaker of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project in Ernie's name.
