Erma J. Meskimen, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at Northbrook Manor Care Center. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Dustin Vu. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and on Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Erma is survived by her son, David of Swisher; daughter, Darla Hanson of Cedar Rapids; four grandsons, Brett (Shonda), Scott (Amy) and Craig (Ashley) Meskimen and Curtis Hormann; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Regis Meskimen of Cedar Rapids and Orville (Donna) Meskimen of Ely; three sisters-in-law, Shar Tomash, Donna (Sonny) Hartl and Shirley (Paul) Vislisel, all of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Vern Staskal; three sisters, Ruth Mitvalsky, Eleanor Dusil and Dorothy Sirowy; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Meskimen; and her special friend, Curt Erger.
Erma was born on Oct. 15, 1929, the daughter of Joe and Libbie Makovsky Staskal, and married Vincent Meskimen on Nov. 26, 1947, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. She retired in 1993 from Cherry Burrell after 33 years. She was a life member and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788 Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Pekomy Post Auxiliary and Czech Heritage Foundation.
Erma enjoyed playing golf, bowling, solving crossword puzzles and listening to the Sunday Morning Polka radio show.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the VFW Post 788 Auxiliary.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Mercy and the caring staff at Northbrook Manor Care Center.
