Eric Silas Smith, 72, of Manchester, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, from injuries suffered from a vehicle accident north of Manchester near his home in Dutchtown on his way to work. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, with visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Forestville Cemetery, Dundee.
Eric was born April 3, 1944, to Donald and Clara (Ehne) Smith in Manchester. His early years were spent on a farm north of Masonville. In 1946, they moved to the Ehne family farm in Dutchtown. Eric attended grade school at the little red schoolhouse north of Manchester and then attended West Delaware for junior high and high school. On June 13, 1962, Eric married Shelia Becker. To this union three children were born. Eric and Shelia were married for over 54 years. For the past 30-plus years, Eric served as president of Crawford Transport in Lamont, Iowa.
Eric is survived by his wife, Shelia of Manchester; two sons, Randy Eric Smith of Manchester and Dondy (Kim) Smith of Cocoa, Fla.; one daughter, Robin Smith of Culpeper, Va.; and three grandchildren, Ryan Smith of Manchester, Abbie (Brandon) Watson of St. Paul, Minn., and Eric James Smith of Culpeper. He also is survived by his many family and friends. Eric was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Carma and Ronnie Hon; and brother, Dennis.
Eric enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing since a young age. He loved teaching his grandchildren to fish, and spent many mornings on the Mississippi with close friend, Ernie. His love and compassion will be remembered by all he encountered.
