Enid Lou (Burns) Gillihan, 80, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Lexington Estate Care Center in Independence. She lived a long, successful life filled with much happiness and love.
Enid was born Oct. 3, 1935, in Anita, Iowa, to Tom and Wilma (Wagner) Burns. Following her graduation from Anita High School in 1953, she received a degree in elementary education from Drake University in Des Moines. She married Clarence "Gene" Gillihan on June 17, 1956. They had two children: Kathryn Gillihan of Rowley and Shawn Gillihan of Edgewood.
Education was an important part of Enid's life. She taught school in Madrid and Gowrie, Iowa, but the majority of her years were teaching sixth grade at East Buchanan schools in Quasqueton and Winthrop. She retired in 1996. Enid also was a longtime member of PEO.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords, jumbles and other puzzles. Enid and Gene both enjoyed music and loved to go dancing.
She was a loving, thoughtful and caring mother. She will be greatly missed.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Gene; and two sisters, Betty and Marie; and one brother, Orin.
She is survived by her two children.
A Celebration of Life service will be 1: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, with Pastor Lisa Thedens officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date.
