Elsie Martha Vaupel Wilson, 88, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following surgery. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Trinity Luth-eran Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Stephen Preus officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service time at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
Elsie was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Shellsburg, to Justus and Gertrud (Umbach) Vaupel, who had immigrated from Kuchen, Germany. After graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton, she attended Allen Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo.
She was united in marriage to Ralph B. Wilson on Feb. 23, 1947. They lived in Fairbanks and Waterloo before settling in the Vinton area. They cele-brated nearly 53 years together before Ralph passed away in 2000.
Elsie worked as a nurse at Virginia Gay Hospital and the Annex when it opened, Keystone Care Center, The Vinton Lutheran Home and the County Home. She also worked at Vinton Motor Supply.
Her favorite pasttimes were hosting family dinners and baking. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Janice Ozias of Austin, Texas, Elaine (Lyle) Bolton of Vinton, James (Penny) Wilson of Vinton and Charles (Pam) Wilson of Cedar Rapids; her five grandchildren, Orin Ozias of Austin, Texas, Jamie (Cheo) Wilson Sierra of Forest Grove, Ore., Kim (Chad) Newton of Vinton, Elizabeth (Chris Henkel) Fowler of Hiawatha and Austin Wilson of Cedar Rapids; and three beautiful great-granddaughters, Sophia and Annabelle Newton and Jocelyn Ozias. She is also survived by her dear sisters-in-law, Fern Wilson Andrews of Manchester and Viola Vaupel of Vinton.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her siblings, Frieda Epperson, Carl Wilson, Helen Birker and Albert Vaupel; and son-in-law, Doug Ozias.
The family appreciates the kind care Elsie received at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab Center and at Mercy Medical Center.
