ELSIE DAMISCH
Cedar Rapids
Elsie Viola Damisch, 97, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Tama. A rosary will be recited Monday at 4 p.m. with a vigil service to follow at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family following the rosary until 7 p.m., and Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Elsie was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Tama County, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Drahos Votrobeck. She graduated from Elberon High School in 1937 and the Paris Beauty Academy as a beautician in 1939. Elsie married Charles Joseph Damisch Sr. on April 7, 1942, in Tama. Charles died in 1999.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and ZCBJ.
Elsie is survived by her children, Sharron (Mark) LaGrange, Nancy (Gary) Strandberg, Richard (Betty) Damisch, James Damisch and Bonnie (Greg) Van Sloten, all from the Cedar Rapids area, and Charlene (Randy) Boyer of Anthon; 21 grandchildren; 28 great- grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Betty Damisch; sister-in-law, Catherine Willwerth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Charles Jr,; grandson, Mark Damisch; and sisters, Doris Kubalek and Eleanor Votrobeck.
Mom was a wonderful mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She made a friend with everyone she met and enjoyed visiting, especially her grandchildren.
She was an artist, writer and musician. Elsie enjoyed playing the keyboard at care centers and using her craft skills to make yarn dogs and bead dolls. She loved family gatherings and was always ready to play a game of rummy. Though we will miss the aroma of her baking, especially her delicious pies and kolaches, we will especially miss her love.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
