Elsasser, George F.
George F. Elsasser, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 16, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Private family services will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; children, Stephen (Abby) Elsasser of Chicago, Elizabeth (Jason) Mays of Normal, Ill., Robert Elsasser of San Francisco, Calif., and William (Lisa) Elsasser of Carrollton, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Christine.
George was born March 5, 1930, in Perry, to Herman and Dortha Wilkins Elsasser. He married Barbara Hunt in Greeley on Oct. 13, 1973. George had been involved with non-profit groups for more than 40 years, most recently managing the Senior Internship Program for the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program. Prior to that, George was a high school Humanities teacher. He was an Army Air Corps veteran. George was an avid student and reader with interests in science, art and history. He enjoyed playing golf but his greatest love was to spend time with his family, particularly his grandchildren.
