Elmer "Sarge" Krueger, 94, of Lowden, Iowa, died Dec. 31, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospital. Burial services with military honors will occur at Rock Island National Cemetery for immediate family. Sarge served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He served in World War II from 1944 to 1946 in the South Pacific and was awarded two Bronze Stars, Purple Heart with one cluster, Combat Infantry Badge and other decorations. Immediately following honorable discharge, he entered the Army Reserves, attained the rank of master sergeant, and retired after 26 years of service.
Sarge farmed for much of his life until his retirement in 1983. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling, golfing, playing his accordion for area nursing homes, and always cheered on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Sarge is survived by his wife, Welma; his daughter, Melody; his son, John (Cheryl); and his granddaughter, Briana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.
