Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, May 8, at Immanuel Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids. Pastor Dan Wiersema will officiate. Burial: North Lawn Cemetery, Canton, Ohio.
Elmer "Jim" was born Dec. 18, 1939, in Indiana, the son of Dalton and Dorthy (Cole) Freeman. On Aug. 4, 1968, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Weirich in Winchester, Va. Jim was a union iron worker with Local 89 in Cedar Rapids for 40-plus years before retiring in 1997. He also was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Cedar Rapids.
Jim cherished his excursions with his camper "Clyde." He was a fisherman and he relished trout season. Jim could be found at many car shows and had a passion for Mustangs and any muscle cars. He loved working with his hands and he was a great cook. Jim always had a good time at flea markets, but nothing could compare to the joy he found when he was with his family.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Kathryn (Brian) Moser of Cedar Rapids and Shannon (Darryl) Studt of Lisbon; son, Sean Freeman of Cedar Rapids; stepdaughters, Dyann (Shaun) Bethune of Centerville, Denice (Kenneth) Burr of Cedar Rapids and Donna (Jeff) Sherritt of North Canton, Ohio; stepson, David (Xue) Gross of North Canton; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Douglas Clark of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; sisters, Louise and Betty; and his brother, Bill.
