Elmer Leo Hahn, 87, of Solon, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Solon United Methodist Church, located at 122 N. West St., with the Rev. Scott Kober presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Elmer was born Oct. 17, 1927, on the family farm between Solon and West Branch, the son of Raymond J. and Alice V. (Dewey) Hahn. He married Dorothy "Jean" Buchmayer on Feb. 13, 1947, at First Methodist Church in Iowa City. Elmer was a lifetime farmer and worked at Lakeview Elementary School for more than 16 years as a bus driver and head custodian. Elmer was past president of Johnson County Sheep and Wool Growers Association and Johnson County Farm Bureau, Solon School Board member, Eagles and REAC, 4-H leader, Newport Township clerk, secretary of Tri-Township Fire Department and past chairman of Johnson County Extension Council. He was master lamb producer for the State of Iowa in 1983 and he received the Iowa Football Coaches Distinguished Service Award. He was very proud of being a farmer and a strong community member by attending and watching football, basketball and wrestling.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Gary (Kathy) Hahn of Aurora, Colo., and their children, Brian (Katie) Hahn, Kelly (Brian) Fletcher and Kevin Hahn; Beckie (Myron) Smalley of Iowa City and their children, Kristin (Scott) Mayo, Jenna and Chelsea Smalley; and Julie (Jeff) Kessler of Solon and their children, Justin and Jordan Kessler; five great-grandchildren, Nile and Kallan Mayo, Dylan Hahn, Boden Fletcher and baby Fletcher expected in February; his brother, Clarence (Miriam) Hahn of Castle Rock, Colo.; as well as his nieces and nephews.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Orianna Haman; and his brother-in-law, Karl Buchmayer.
Memorials may be directed to either the Solon Fire Department or the church.
