Elmer Justin "Al" Brandt, 98, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of East Dubuque, Ill., passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at Winslow House Care Center in Marion. Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Elmer was born June 22, 1919, in Dubuque, Iowa, son
of Justin and Lillian (Plein) Brandt. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Before entering the Army, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Backbone State Park in Strawberry Point. Elmer served in the Army during World War II, spending time in Okinawa and Guam while building airfields for the Army Corps of Engineers. On May 19, 1949, in East Dubuque, Elmer and Ida (Hesseling) were united in marriage. Elmer worked for many years for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring in 1979. Elmer spent his last 2½ years at Winslow House Care Center in Marion, where he enjoyed playing bingo, feeding the birds, listening to music and singing along whether he knew the words or not.
Survivors include his daughters, Jane (Wayne) Lovstuen of Kirksville, Mo., and Barbara Brandt of Marion; grandchildren, Sharon (Chanh) Lovstuen-Nguyen of Cedar Rapids and Brenda (Nathan Morrison) Lovstuen of Mount Vernon; great-grandchildren, Kirin and Dakota Nguyen; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida; and sisters, Velva Johnson and Corrine Brown.
