Elma Grace Smith was born April 23, 1934, the daughter of Leo and Grace (Mills) Smith. She grew up in the Coggon area, where some of her fondest memories were farming with her dad and uncles. Elma graduated from Coggon High School in 1952. She married Paul Pillard Jr. and they later divorced. Together they had four sons. Elma worked at Collins
Radio in Cedar Rapids in the 1950s. During the early 1960s, she farmed in the Central City area, before moving to the Quad City area in 1963. Elma worked at B.E.C. Controls in Mount Joy and Sears Manufacturing in Davenport. Before her retirement in 1994, she had worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for many years.
Elma enjoyed visiting with family and friends, as well as traveling to visit other relatives and classmates. She took great pride in her yard and flowers.
