Toulon, Ill.
Ellen Stiegelmeyer, 88, formerly of Vinton, Iowa, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, after losing her battle with COVID-19.
Ellen was born in Marengo, Iowa, on Aug. 31, 1932, to Bruce and Alice (Schumacher) Hedges. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1950, then graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1952. She was united in marriage to Howard on June 1, 1958, in Marengo, Iowa. She taught first grade from 1952-60, when she became a homemaker after the birth of her only child, Loren. Ellen enjoyed writing letters to her numerous friends for years. She was passionate about animal rescue and her many indoor pets over the years. She was fond of puzzles and crosswords.
She is survived by her two grandchildren, Kelsey (Ryan) Main of Woodhull, Ill., and Drew Stiegelmeyer of Kewanee, Ill.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Howard; and her son, Loren.
A private graveside burial and service will be held at a future date at Bishop Cemetery in Amana, Iowa. Condolences can be sent to Kelsey Main, 1858 E. 1180th At, Woodhull, IL 61490.
The family of Ellen would like to thank the staff at Toulon nursing home for the excellent care they provided Ellen over the last few years, and thank OSF Hospice for providing loving care during the end of her life.
