Ellen Clewell, 86, of Iowa City, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, at Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center, West Branch. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. March 18 at St. Patrick's Church in the Day Chapel, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery, Cuba City, Wis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Church or Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center.
Ellen was the second daughter born to Wesley and Estelle Clewell of Dubuque, Iowa, on Oct. 10, 1929. Ellen attended grade and high school in Dubuque's St. Columbkille, graduating in 1947. She completed Clarke College in 1951, followed by her dietitian internship, and masters degree in food and nutrition at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Her professional employment history included staff positions at University Hospitals in Iowa City and Veterans Administration Hospitals in Louisville, Ky., Milwaukee, Wis., and Iowa City. Ellen retired from her clinical dietitian position in Iowa City in March 1992.
Ellen was a past member of National Iowa State Dietetic Association and Iowa City District Association. She also was a member of St. Patrick's Altar and Rosary Society, God's Helping Hands and needle workers, NARFE (National Assosiation of Retired Federal Employees) and Red Hats.
She is survived by three nieces, Barbara (Jeff) Cage of Redwood City, Calif., Patricia Hattwick of Pittsburg, Ca., and Julie (Steve) Wetmore of Chico, Calif.; and their children; two cousins-in-law, Jerrie Clewell of Moline, Ill., and Ozzie (Lois) Clewell of Des Moines; and many extended family.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Anne Hattwick; brother-in-law, Bill Hattwick; and cousins, Margaret, Robert, Allen and James Clewell. She also was preceded in death by her four dogs and three cats whom she loved through the years.
The family would like to thank the staff at Crestview Nursing Home for taking care of Ellen like she was family and Care Initiative Hospice for always listening when the family needed someone to talk to.
