Ella Wernimont, 81, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Joan and Ed Hemphill Hospice unit at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 Tuesday morning, April 5, at St. Luke Catholic Church, Hopkinton, where visitation will be Monday from 4 until 7 p.m., beginning with the parish vigil service. Visitation will resume at 9:30 Tuesday morning at the church until Mass begins. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monticello. Father Paul Baldwin will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has been entrusted with Ella's services.

Surviving are her husband, Bill; two children, Brenda Wernimont of Cedar Rapids and Pat (Lu Schneider) Wernimont of Monticello; her son-in-law, Dennis Freiburger of Delhi; four grandchildren, Chevy (Maria) Freiburger, Angie (Jay) Britt, Heather Freiburger and Chantal (Joe) Petesch; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Aspen, Valentina, Ryleigh and Jacey; four sisters, Betty McIntosh, Sharon Meyer, Juanita Lake and Diane (Dale) Potter; six brothers, Robert DeShaw, Steve (Lyda) DeShaw, Lee (Gale) DeShaw, Gary (Deb) DeShaw, Larry (Connie) DeShaw and Earl (Joann) DeShaw; and in-laws, Luella DeShaw, Donna Rae DeShaw, Gary (Patsy) Wernimont and Lora Gudenkauf.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cindy Freiburger, in December 2014; an infant son, Charles; her stepmother, Virginia (Jen) DeShaw; her brothers, Duane Jr., Francis and Roger; a sister, Jacqueline; and in-laws, Bernadine DeShaw, Roger McIntosh, Gilbert and Doris Wernimont and David Gudenkauf.
Ella Mae DeShaw was born Feb. 26, 1935, near Hopkinton, Iowa, the daughter of Duane and Carrie (Besler) DeShaw. Ella graduated from Buck Creek High School in 1953. Ella married William Wernimont on July 12, 1955, at St. Luke Catholic Church, Hopkinton. The couple farmed in the Hopkinton area. They retired from active farming in 2000 and moved to Hopkinton.
Ella was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
She enjoyed going to church, playing cards with friends and going downtown for coffee in the morning. She especially loved preparing holiday dinners for her family and making her famous chocolate pies.
