Ella May Eggert, 101, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday Jan. 12, 2018. Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 1 p.m. The Rev. Kim Pagel will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include daughter, Jane (Edward) Pini of Mechanicsville; her grandchildren, Janelle Lauer of Cedar Rapids and Delia (Chris) Perry of Toledo, Ohio; and her great-grandchildren, Savannah Lauer, Anthony Lauer, Lilia Perry and Wynn Perry.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and siblings.

Ella May was born in Hulett, Wyo., and spent some childhood in the Black Hills until her father traded his ranch for a farm in Iowa near Mechanicsville. There she graduated from high school in 1934 during hard times. However, her father made sure she went to State Teachers College to become a teacher. She married her high school sweetheart, John H. Eggert, on Sept. 8, 1940, in Iowa City. He soon was drafted to serve in World War II in Europe. Meanwhile, she taught third grade. When the war was over, she and John had a daughter, Jane. In 1989, John passed away. As a widow for nearly 30 years, she was kept busy with her two granddaughters and her pets.

Some of her other interests included teaching Sunday school, working with plants, reading and keeping up with the news. She prided herself on living nearly to her 102 birthday. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
