Elizabeth June Schwarzhoff-Berns, 94, of Prairie du Chien, Wis., died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, Wis.
She was born March 18, 1920, to Gephardt and Reva (Gilson) Meskimen in Waukon, Iowa. Elizabeth graduated from Waukon High School in 1938 and beauty school in 1940.
Betty was united in marriage with Aloysius "Scoop" Schwarzhoff in January 1941 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, Iowa. He passed away Aug. 16, 1980. She later married Roland Berns in March 1987 and he passed away in May 2003.
Betty was an owner/operator of Betty's Powder Puff Beauty Shop in Chicago. She retired to McGregor, Iowa, in 1971. She enjoyed playing cards and watching the Chicago Cubs.
Betty is survived by her five children, Reginald (Neva) Schwartzhoff of Twin Falls, Idaho, Linda Schlitter of Phoenix, Ariz., Trudy (Tom) Dockus of Camarillo, Calif., Sandy (Jerry) Lester of Farmersburg and Deb (Bill) Woods of Phoenix, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Durwood, Elizabeth, Daniel, Debra, Danette, Dennis, Amy, Kara, Alex, Josalyn and Amanda; 10 great-grandchildren; and a
brother, Richard Steiber
of Maryland.
Betty was preceded in death by her two husbands; two daughters, Sherri Schwatzhoff in 1983 and Jackie Skowronski in 2013; a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth; her
parents; and her sisters, Evelyn Hanson, Lena Duball and Lorraine Steiger.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Prairie Catholic School Library in Betty's honor.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien, Wis.
