ELIZABETH GOODALE
Iowa City
Elizabeth "Betty" Hinds Goodale, 93, of Iowa City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City,
where Betty was a member for nearly 70 years, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. A rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. A private graveside service will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque, where Betty will be buried next to her late husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Betty Goodale Memorial Fund.
Betty was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on Jan. 10, 1921, the daughter of Robert and Mary Julia (Benda) Hinds. She grew up in Dubuque, where she met the love of her life, Dr. William "Bill" Goodale. The two moved to Iowa City following World War II so Bill could attend dental school. Together they had four children. Betty stayed in Iowa City following Bill's untimely death in 1964, single- handedly raising their four children.
She served the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics during six decades, retiring in 1990.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings, Harriet LaBarge, Jean Remy, Bill Hinds, Rita Schueller and Bob Hinds; and two siblings in infancy, Bernice and Maurice.
Betty will always be remembered for her warm, friendly approach to life. She had an undeniable, yet understated pride in her children and grandchildren. She radiated great joy anytime she was with her friends or family. Betty was always up for a good game of cards and loved cheering on the Hawkeyes and Cubs.
Left to remember her gentle hand of guidance will be her children, Dave (Buffy) Goodale of Loveland, Ohio, Mary (Doug) Kleopfer of Riverside, Joan (Dave) Kabela of West Branch and Chris (Dawn) Goodale of Indianola.
Gram Goody was deeply loved and respected by her grandchildren, Chad and Adam Goodale, Kelly (Michael) Lentsch, Riley, Mollie and Jesse Kleopfer, Erik (Megan) and Kerri Kabela and Rob, Joe and Tommy Goodale; and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Esther Kabela. Aunt Betty was loved and enjoyed by her many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Crestview Nursing Home for the loving care they provided Betty.
