Eleanor "Ellie" M. Carter, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2015, at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or charity of donor's choice.
Ellie was born March 27, 1924, in Windham, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey and Stella Driscoll Henderson. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School and was an account relations officer at Iowa State Bank & Trust (MidWestOne Bank) for over 42 years, retiring in 1987. She married Paul "Nick" Carter on May 11, 1974, in Iowa City. Nick passed away on June 27, 2002. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a volunteer at Mercy Iowa City.
Survivors include her daughter, LeaAnn Thompson (James) of Madison, Wis.; stepsons, Jim Carter (Debbie) of Iowa City and Dennis Carter (Katha) of Fayetteville, Ark.; grand-daughters, Amanda Johnston (Lionel) of Eagle Grove, Sara Gilson (Brad) of Strawberry Point, Shannon Innis (John) of Coralville, Stephanie Boesenberg (Jim) of Cedar Rapids and Jamie Evans (Morgan) of North Liberty; great-grandchildren, Emma Johnston, Grace Johnston, Brenna Gilson, Ryan Boesenberg, Grace Evans and Casey Evans; brother, Richard Henderson (Colleen) of Iowa City; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Henderson of Iowa City and Shirley Henderson of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Shirl Thompson.
Ellie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son; brothers, Eugene Henderson, Robert Henderson and Donald Henderson; daughter, Patti Hurmence; and stepdaughter, Janis Carter.
