Elaine Wehde
ELAINE BEVERLY WEHDE
Des Moines
Elaine Beverly Wehde was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Fredricksburg, Iowa, to Mark Muir and Grace Wilson. She was the first of four children. She spent her childhood in the Fredricksburg and Waterloo area, and graduated from high school in Waterloo. After high school, she moved to Eastern Iowa and met her husband, Kenneth (Pete) Wehde, when she was working in Tipton, Iowa. They were married in Tipton on Aug. 30, 1952.
Four children were born to Pete and Elaine: Rebecca, Christina, David and Michael. Because of Pete's work, Elaine and the family moved around some, from Tipton back to Waterloo, to Solon, back to Waterloo, to Decorah, to Palm Bay, Fla. Pete and Elaine finally retired to Des Moines.
After Pete died in 2000, Elaine moved to Plymouth Place. There she was active in a quilting group and loved to crochet. Elaine had a big heart and always had time for a conversation. She loved plants and filled her apartment with them. She also loved animals and always had a beloved pet, the last being Max the cat. When Elaine's health began to fail, she resisted giving up her fantastic 12th floor view of downtown Des Moines after 17 years.
Elaine is survived by her brother, Tony Muir and his wife of Arizona; sister, Ardith Carlson of Florida; brother-in-law, James Christoffersen; daughter, Christina Wehde and her husband, Layne Lindebak, of Des Moines; sons, David of Wilton, Iowa, and Michael of Stanwood, Iowa; grandchildren, Matthew Baker (Kim Haymond), Michelle Baker (David Grifhorst), Amanda Tope (Ryne), Aaron Lindebak, Linsie Mairet and Katarina Wehde; and great-grandchildren, Alexander and Caitriona Baker.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; sister, Lee Christoffersen; and daughter, Rebecca, and Rebecca's husband, Kenneth Baker.
Elaine passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2021. Services and interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Woodbridge Cemetery, near Tipton, Iowa. There will be a reception at Buchanan House Winery, Tipton, Iowa, after the burial.
