Edwin Raymond Sumner Sr. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on Dec. 22, 2017. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 27, at the funeral home with visitation one hour before the service. Bailey Stuefen will officiate. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Edwin was born Oct. 24, 1938, the son of Charles and Anna (Blackstone) Sumner. He attended Wilson High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1959. Edwin proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1962. He married Janet Foster on Sept. 23, 1960. He was a union iron worker for Local 89 for 50 years before he retired. Edwin was an excellent musician who played the guitar and mandolin. He was an avid woodworker who also enjoyed fishing with his family. Edwin and Janet had fun traveling to casinos to gamble in their later years.
Survivors include his children, Edwin Sumner Jr., Joey (Wendy) Sumner, James Sumner Sr., Tracy (Mickey) Stuefen, Tanya (Brian) Hopp and James Sumner Jr.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janet; son, Bud Summers; siblings, Helen McVay, Charles "Bucky" Sumner, Phyllis Bruner, Bob Sumner, Jerry Sumner and Vivian Pyle.
