Edward "Lee" Sanders, 76, of Palo, passed from his earthly being peacefully on May 12, 2016, at his home.
Edward Lee (Sam) was born Dec. 14, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa, to L. Jay and Elsie E. (Usher) Sanders. He was a lifelong resident of Palo and graduated from Palo Consolidated School with the Class of 1957. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a MM3 on the USS Trumpetfish SS425 from 1957 to 1960.
He worked in construction, and for many years as a driver and owner-operator for various companies starting with Waydens Heavy Haulers and including Iowa Manufacturing and ADM.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, golfing and watching his "Bears and Cubbies." Upon retiring, he enjoyed the sunny and warm weather of Donna, Texas, at his "winter" home.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Marlene; his children, Kelly (Tracy) Franck, Kimberly Sanders, James (Lisa) Sanders and Kari (James) Voss; his grandchildren, Austen (Kayla) Franck, Lindsey (Barry) Fuessley, Evan Franck, Ben and Sydney Sanders, Jakeb, Karlee and Kaci Jo Voss; and five great-children, Keegan, Adalynn and Kinnley Franck and Kennen and Cora Lee Fuessley.
He is survived by his sister, Darlene Squires of Center Point; two brothers, Richard and Thomas (Terry) Sanders of Palo; sister-in-law, June Sanders; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Robert Ray Sanders; and brother-in-law, Everett Squires.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Per his request, burial will be at a later date, with a celebration honoring his life to be held at the Shellsburg American Legion on May 22, from 1 to 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be directed to Palo Savings Bank, Palo, Iowa, for the family.
