Edward "Ed" D. Kadera, 91, of Onalaska, Wis., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, surrounded by his family. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at St. Jude's Catholic Church, 50 Edgewood Rd. NW, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 4 p.m. There will be an additional visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Burial with military rites by the Marion American Legion Post 298, in Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Onalaska, Wis.; one daughter, Barbara (Dale) Bates of Onalaska; three sons, Dave (Karolyn) Kadera of Dorchester, Steve Kadera of Whitehall, Wis., and Tim Kadera of Cedar Rapids; two daughters-in-law, Mary Lou (Dennis) of West Bend, Wis., and Rose Kadera of Davenport; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one sister; one brother; and many other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Donald and Michael Kadera; two grandsons; and one great-grandchild.
Edward was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Fredericksburg, Iowa, to Samuel and Anna (Zamastil) Kadera. He married Betty M. Crown on Jan. 31, 1942, in Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo, Iowa, spending 72 years together. Ed served our country in the United States Navy from December 1942, until being honorably discharged in December 1945. He then moved back to Waterloo, working for John
Deere Co.
He began his banking career in 1948 at Peoples Bank and Trust in Waterloo. He also was a member of the National Association of Accountants and served as president in 1957-58. In February 1963, he was hired by Merchants National Bank of Cedar Rapids and later became bank operations specialist at BICS of Iowa (Banks of Iowa Computer service), a part of MNB. Ed retired on July 31, 1985, and the couple enjoyed traveling with their fifth wheel throughout the country. In August 2009, they moved to Onalaska, Wis., due to health issues, to be near family. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law from February 2013, until the time of his death.
Ed enjoyed traveling, fishing and woodworking, spending many hours creating furniture for family and friends. He was an active lifetime member in Sertoma and held the position of secretary-treasurer in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Cedar Rapids and Boy Scouts of America in Waterloo, serving them in many ways.
