John was born Sept. 7, 1919, to Marie and Wenzel Hellmich of Beaman, Iowa. He graduated from Conrad High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a longtime member of the American Legion. John had a love of working and caring for the farm land near Whitten, Iowa, for over 40 years.
John was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed traveling throughout the entire U.S. and much of the world. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and Rummikub and watching sports.
The greatest joy and pride for John were his four children, Kaye Ann of Arlington, Va., Donna (John) Winter of Cedar Rapids, Mary Hellmich of Chicago and Rick (Dee) Hellmich of Algona; and his grandchildren, Dr. Christine (Justin) Winter-Rundell of Cedar Rapids, Matt Winter of Marion, Dr. Jessica (Dr. John Sarwark) Starck of Chicago, Stephanie (Mark) Skeba of Minneapolis, Minn., Will Starck of Washington, D.C., Brian (Amy) Hellmich, currently stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force, and Erica Hellmich of Ames.
John had seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen Hemphill; and is survived by his sister, Ann Shirk of Papillion, Neb.
John's family would like to convey their appreciation to the staff at Oak Estates Assisted Living in Conrad for the loving, family-type care they shared during his last 13 years of life. We also thank the medical staff at St. Luke's Hospice for their kind, thoughtful care for Dad and the family.
