Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. Interment will be after the service at St. John Lutheran Cemetery near Newhall. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, also at the church in Newhall. She led a Christ- and family-filled life, which was her greatest gift to her children and grandchildren.
Edna was the last of 16 children born to Dan and Lena (Dyrland) Risdal at the family farm east of Newhall on July 17, 1924. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Norway, Iowa. Edna graduated from Newhall Consolidated School in 1942.
On April 10, 1943, she was united in marriage to Howard William Stien at the Lutheran Parsonage in Norway, Iowa. Their lives would be spent farming that same farm where she was born. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. Edna was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. She served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member in the Ladies Aid, Tabitha Society, Friendship Club and "500" card clubs. Edna loved working on the farm and tending to her family. Edna and Howard loved dancing and could be found every Sunday at the Ponderosa Ballroom. She will be remembered for her amazing roast beef dinners, homemade raspberry jam and peach pie. She loved helping to care for her siblings and grandchildren. They also loved to travel America from coast to coast in their Ford.
Edna is survived by her three children, David William, Vinton Lutheran Home, Diane Jeanette and Douglas Alan (Debbie) Stien, all of Newhall; six grandchildren, Elizabeth (Thomas) Heckman, Allison, Iowa, Stephanie (Tony) Schreck, Needville, Texas, Ellen (Larry) Kling, Ceylon, Minn., Jake (Katie) Stien, Watkins, Ryan (Ashley) Stien, West Des Moines, and Luke (Kristin) Stien, Atkins. Edna was blessed to know eight great-grandchildren, David and Kaitlynn Heckman, Thomas and James Schreck, Joseph and Brody Stien and Jackson and Elsie Stien. She also is survived by sister-in-law, Pat Risdal, Clive, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard, in 2003; daughter-in-law, Shirley Stien; brothers, Casper (Louise), Orvie (Rosie), Clifford (Marcella), Blaine (Bernice), Firman (Pat), Dean, Marion, Milford and Glen (Martha) Risdal; sisters, Alice (Herb) Christy, Letha (Harry) Wendel, Dorothy (Henry) Trosky and Eleanor (Fred) Moeller; twin infant sisters; daughter-in-law, Shirley Stien; and in-laws, Richard (Mary) and Delbert (Hazel) Stien.
We extend a thank-you for the loving, compassionate care that Edna received at the Keystone Care Center during her seven-year stay, and to Joanne Radeke for the weekly hair care to make Mom feel and look beautiful. Thanks to Hospice Compassus for guidance and care during the last months. And special appreciation to Pastor Rempfer, Holly and Joe for the blessing of their presence, prayers and support. Mom was grateful.
