Edna Mae Caldwell Cashatt, 90, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon. Edna will be buried in the Eddyville Cemetery. Arrangements have been made through Morgan Funeral & Cremation Choices.
Surviving Edna are two sons, Thomas of Cedar Rapids and Walter of Ayden, N.C.; a daughter, Donna Norton of Mount Vernon; two grandsons, Brian Norton and Russell Norton and his partner, Eli Norton; and three great-grand-daughters, Taylor Nicole Norton, Kayleigh Steffen and Brianna Kiley; a great-grandson, Kollin Rogers; and a sister, Violet Krizan of Minnesota.
Preceding Edna in death were her husband, Myrle, who died April 23, 1984; and an infant son, Ray Wayne Cashatt, who died in 1948.
Edna was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne Daniel and Sarah Elsie Curtis Caldwell.
During World War II, Edna worked as a welder for the Chamberlin Corp. and as a machinist for John Deere, both in Waterloo. She married Myrle G. Cashatt on July 17, 1946, in Hannibal, Mo. In 1952, Edna and Myrle moved to Eddyville, Iowa, where they operated Cashatt's Fina gas station and The Highway Cafe restaurant. In addition, the couple owned The Market, a 30-acre truck farm, where they sold fruits and vegetables.
In 1962, she and her family moved to Waterloo, where she was head baker for seven years at Bishop's Buffet. Edna and her husband were partners in Edna's Concrete, a lawn ornament business. They retired to Lisbon in 1975 and moved to Mount Vernon in 1978.
