Edith Nelda Von Sprecken, 97, died Jan. 19, 2018, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the church service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, Iowa.
Burial: Wyoming Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, David Von Sprecken and wife, Sandi, of Shueyville; a
daughter, Marie Peeters of
Cedar Rapids; seven grand-
children, Jeff (Michelle) Von Sprecken, Eric (Tracy) Von Sprecken, Angela (Travis) Janko, Amy (Joe) Valentine, Alison (Ben) Sanders, Mike (Cherie) Hathcock and Michelle Mask; 21 great-grandchildren, Logan, Jared, Adam, Adrian, Wil, Megan, Travis, Kayla, Peyton, Carter, Michael, Cody, Jacob, Mia, Sydni, Kaelynn, Michael, Andrea, Aldin, Andrew and Jacob; and six great-great-grandchildren, Max, Reece, Brennan, Madison, Caroline and Kighla Rae Ann.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, Marvin Von Sprecken; her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.
Edith was born June 28, 1920, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Edith Davis. She attended Center Junction School and graduated in 1936. On Sept. 7, 1938, Edith married George M. Von Sprecken in Anamosa.
After their marriage, they farmed in various places.
Edith worked at Rockwell Collins for 22 years retiring in 1978. The highlight of Edith's career at Rockwell Collins was the time she worked on the Apollo space program.
Above all, Edith enjoyed her family and grand-children. Edith and her husband George played Rummy every morning once they retired. Edith also enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, going to the movies and the theater, reading and sewing. Completing the newspaper crossword puzzle was a daily activity. In her early 90s, it was typical for Edith to read about six books every two to three weeks from the Cedar Rapids and Marion
libraries. Edith was an active member of Zion American Lutheran Church. She sewed and contributed many quilt tops for Lutheran relief services.
We are very thankful to the staff of Living Center West where she resided the last two years and 10 months. The staff gave mom lots of hugs, loved her sense of humor and smile and treated her with kindness and compassion.
