Edith "Edy" Marie Meyer, 84, of rural Fairfax, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018,
at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Celebration of Life Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW in Cedar Rapids. Private family burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fairfax. Friends may visit with the family after 10 a.m. Friday until the time of service.
Edy was born to Edwin and Edith Showman on Jan. 25, 1934, in Sigourney, Iowa, and attended Sigourney Schools, where she was a tuba player and band majorette.
On April 30, 1966, she married John Meyer in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in rural Western, Swisher, and then for 43 years on an acreage near Walford. Edy was employed at Rockwell Collins from 1962 to 1989, until retiring to spend time with her grandchildren, gardening, sewing and spending time tending her flowers on their acreage. Edy loved roller skating and spending Wednesdays eating in Cedar Rapids with her many skating friends. She also enjoyed traveling, gambling and going to Collins Craft Club.
Edy is survived by her husband, John; son, Allan Richardson of Niles, Mich.; daughters, Monica Claman of Rock Springs, Wyo., Deidre (Ron) Frett of Manchester and Michelle (Mike) Burhite of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jason Richardson, Eric Richardson, David Claman, Matthew Richardson, Ryan Richardson, Johnathan Burhite, Christopher Burhite, Chelsea Villers, Zachary Burhite, Mitchell Plott and Kristen Woodrick; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Klein; son-in-law, Robert Nicola; and many, many friends.
Edy was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Laura Nicola; son, Michael Richardson; in-laws, Albert and Adeline Meyer; brother, Jack Showman; sister, Frances Showman; and brothers-in-law, Wayne Meyer, Stanley Meyer and Ronald Klein.
