Edith "Edie" M. Wheeler, 78, of Hiawatha, passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Hope United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, with a one hour visitation before the service at the church. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Edie is survived by her husband, Jim; sons, Rob (Cheryl) Wheeler of Wisconsin and Rick (Barb) Wheeler of Michigan; daughter, Renee (Andy) Koopman of Iowa; grandchildren, Tim (Mallory), Erin (Joe) and Laycee; great-grandchildren, Willow and Emmett; sister-in-law, Joyce Cook of Iowa; and a special niece, Carol Jean Murdoch of North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Bob (Audrey) Cook and Norman Cook.
Edie was born May 3, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Nelson and Mary Cook. She graduated from Franklin High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1956. Edie graduated from the Paris Beauty Academy in 1957. On July 14, 1957, she married Jim Wheeler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Edie worked for SS Kresge Co., Sears, Rockwell Collins, and in the food service department at Harding Junior High School.
Edie was proud to be the chairperson of the Hiawatha History Committee. She enjoyed her travels to the national bowling tournaments, national parks, their Alaskan and Caribbean cruises, as well as visiting family and many friends and neighbors. Edie enjoyed flowers and taking care of her lawn and fish pond. She volunteered for many years at the Hiawatha Care Center with her close friend, Jeanette Hamilton. Edie was a marvelous wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all.
