MARIE HAWKINS
Coralville
E. Marie Hawkins, 83, of Coralville, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Crestview Nursing & Rehab Center in West Branch. Her family will host a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. Father Thomas Hulme will officiate. Inurnment will follow the service in the Trinity Episcopal columbarium.
Instead of flowers and plants, the family requests memorials be directed to Pathways Adult Day Care.
Marie was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Bixby, Okla., the daughter of Sydney and Addie (Bell) Jordan. Raised in Bixby and Tulsa, Marie later received her bachelor's degree from Talladega College in Talladega, Ala., and her master's degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Ill. Marie taught special education in Marion and Iowa City for 19 years.
She married Benny Hawkins Sr. on June 28, 1954, in Chicago. Marie and Benny returned to the Iowa City/Coralville area in 1978.
Marie was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and The University Club. She was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award by the Milken Foundation.
Marie is survived by her husband, Benny; her sons, Benny Hawkins Jr. (Beth) of Brandon, Fla., and Christopher Hawkins (Stan Dombrowski) of Dallas; a granddaughter, Rachel M. Hawkins-Reis (Jim) of Adel; great-grandsons, Benton and Tyson Reis, a brother, Sonny, and sisters, Lillie and Mattie.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Roy and L.C.; and sisters, Cathy and Dorothy.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center for the exceptional care Marie received over the last four years.
