Dyrland, Bernard 'Bud'
Bernard “Bud” Dyrland, 89, of Bowie, Md., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully Dec. 9, 2009. Services were held Dec. 11. Burial: Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville, Md., with full military honors.
Bud was born Nov. 24, 1920, to Andrew and Ann (Trumpold) Dyrland. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938 and attended Iowa State University, Ames. In his third year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in World War II and flew P-40 fighter planes in the China-Burma area, earning the air medal and the distinguished flying cross. He remained in the Air Force for 21 years, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. He then worked for NASA at Goddard Space Center in Maryland.
He married Helen Richardson in 1942. They were parents of five children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 2008; his son, Kris; sister, Corinne Fraverd.
He is survived by his children, Russell (Sharon), Linda Miner, both of Bowie, Laura (John) Meyer and Karen (Will) Littleton of Florida; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Lois Keller of Cedar Rapids.
He will be greatly missed by all his family and many friends.
