Duwe, Howard John
Howard John Duwe, 90, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque.
He was born on Oct. 22, 1922, on the home farm north of Guttenberg to Larry and Mathilda (Sadewasser) Duwe. Howard received his education from the country school just west of the home farm. In his younger days, Howard owned his own truck and would haul buttons to Washington, Iowa, for the Button Factory. He also hauled cream for the creamery for many of the local farmers and moved people from place to place while doing many odd jobs. On June 7, 1944, Howard was united in marriage to Berdina Troester. This union blessed them with two children, Denise and Darwin. After Howard sold his truck, he worked for Meuser Lumber Company, until his retirement. In his retirement, Howard planted many potatoes, at least 100 pounds each year which he gave some away to friends. He was very particular about how they were planted and you were told so if you weren't doing it right. Howard loved music especially playing the drums. He was in three local bands, The Peanuts, Arnie and Howie and Keith Willman and Country Key Boards.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Denise (Lyle) Moser of Guttenberg; two grandchildren, Tammy (Dave) Kickbush of Guttenberg and Lee (Rachel) Moser of Waukon; four great-grandchildren, Preslie and Madelyn Moser, and Alex and Carlie Hyde; two brothers, Duwane (Eldora) Duwe of Guttenberg and Curt (Pat) Duwe of Marion; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Berdina; son, Darwin; and sister, Dorene Walters.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First, Guttenberg. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Interment will be at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.
