Lloyd Carver Dumenil, 89, of Ames, died Monday, July 5, 2010, at his daughter's home in Phoenix, Ariz. A private memorial service will be held in Ames this fall.
Lloyd was born July 23, 1920, in Argyle, Iowa, the son of Leslie H. and Elsie (Satterly) Dumenil. Lloyd had been an Ames resident since 1946. Lloyd received a bachelor's degree in agronomy in 1942 from Iowa State University. He served in the Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1943 and, from 1944 to 1946, he lived in Chicago, where he worked for Bell Labs.
He married his college sweetheart, Lualis Darlene Uthoff, daughter of William F. and Gladys (See) Uthoff from Norway, Iowa. Lloyd and Lualis were married in Oak Park, Ill., on June 18, 1944.
Lloyd returned to Ames in 1946 for his master's and doctorate degrees in agronomy from Iowa State. He served on the ISU Agronomy faculty in soil research and worked with graduate students from around the world until he retired in 1986.
He was a member of the ISU Order of the Knoll. He was interested in nature conservancy and active in local politics. He volunteered thousands of hours for the Iowa Conservation Commission and the Iowa Arboretum.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Lualis in 2004; and his son, Robert Carver Dumenil in 1966.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Dumenil of Phoenix; his two sisters, Betty Linn of Tipton and Dorothy Fields of Phoenix; his sister-in-law, Betty Uthoff of Norway; his adopted granddaughter, Leah Ackerman of Ames; two nieces; four great-nieces; and many friends.
