Surrounded by his loving family, Duane “Charlie” Mangold, 77, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton. Memorial service with full military rites will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vinton, with Pastor Anne Williams officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Charlie and his family.
Charlie was born Nov. 26, 1946, in Manchester, the son of Ernest and Hazel (Joslyn) Mangold. He was a graduate of Manchester High School and Automation Computer Training in Kansas City. Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1966-1970. On Feb. 9, 1969, Charlie was united in marriage to Sue Smith at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. He was employed as a supervisor for computer operations at Amana Refrigeration, retiring in 2013.
Charlie loved to tell jokes, golf, fish, play cards, cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and was a “connoisseur of chocolate covered cherries.” Family time and attending his children’s and now his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities were also very special to him. Charlie was a member of the Vinton Kiwanis for four years as well as a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served as a board member, usher, and greeter.
Left to cherish Charlie’s memory are his wife of 54 years, Sue; two sons Jeff (Maggie) Mangold of Vinton and Jason (Sarah) Mangold of Marion; daughter, Jill (Nick) Beecher of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren, Hugh, Reid, Theo, Javan, Anna, Nora, Brant, Wesley, Wyatt and William; two brothers, Merle (Mary) Mangold of Manchester and Bruce (Mary) Mangold of Manchester; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Smith of Manchester and Bill Smith of West Des Moines; and many special nieces and nephews.
Preceding Charlie in death were his parents; brother, Don (Carole) Mangold; and in-laws, Jerry and Abbie Smith.
A memorial fund has been established.
