Dr. William A. “Bill” Davis, 83, a nationally recognized pioneer in the field of in-vitro fertilization, peacefully transitioned into eternal life at his home on December 7, 2025 with family by his side.
Born on November 11, 1942, he devoted his career to giving life. He was a gifted and compassionate OB-GYN whose work helped countless couples conceive families of their own. His calm and affirming bedside manner, paired with his innovative work in reproductive endocrinology, leaves a multigenerational legacy of life and love.
Bill was a true renaissance man — abundantly kind, generous, creative, intellectually curious, artistic, and adventurous. He loved literature, art, music, culture, history, politics, and all things Star Wars and Star Trek. He found joy in nature: skiing in Colorado, hiking the Cascades and Rockies, snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking in Hawaii, and fishing in the pristine waters of Alaska. He honored his creativity through carving totem poles, gardening, singing in choir, reading, writing stories and volunteering at the medical Lending Closet.
Bill married Yvonne Spicher Davis in 1991 and practiced medicine alongside her until her passing in 2012. Bill married Kathryn Franzenburg in 2013.
Bill is survived by his former wife, Jan and their sons, Jason (Kristin) Davis and Matt (Brittany) Davis; Yvonne’s children, Julie (Rob) Schladetzky, Cary Spicher, Lori Spicher (Shawn Pink), Casey (Pam) Spicher, and Greg Spicher (Dr. Laurie Lundblad); his wife, Kathryn and her children, Stephen (Kara), Jason, and Binh (Ngo); grandchildren, Brock, Brody, Hunter, Mackensie, Jon, Tyler, Bret (Jenny), Chase (Yezenia), Amber, Lindsey, Trent (LeAnn) Alex (Ashley), Mandy, Frankie (Nick), Jeremy (Rob), Dylan (Mandy), Kayla (Corey) Cade, Ella, Seth, and Stella; and great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Brock, Gage, Dawson, Lily, Amara, Isaiah, Piper, Ren, Lyn, Maeve, Flora, Miles. He loved all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as his own. He is also survived by his beloved brother, Neal (Susan Adams); nephew, Graham; great-niece, Wilhelmina; and most recently “adopted family” from Namibia, Rauna; and her children, Casey, Cathy and Soriyah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. Davis, Jr. and Ruth C. (Neis) Davis; his wife, Yvonne; and nephew, Jesse Davis.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 610 31st Street SE, Cedar Rapids, IA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be designated to the Lending Closet at Grace Episcopal Church where Bill volunteered…a gift that keeps on giving and serving others.
Bill loved others generously. His love, not his death, will have the final word.
