Dr. Vasanth Balan Solomon, 80, formerly of Ames, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, after a lengthy illness while wintering in his country of origin, Sri Lanka. He was born to Arumymony Solomon and Ruth Sarling Solomon on Aug. 8, 1935, in Tamil Nadu, India.
Dr. Solomon arrived in the USA in 1964 on a Fulbright Scholarship and became a U.S. citizen in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in statistics from ISU in 1970. He was a professor at Drake University for 20 years and later taught at Radford University and Old Dominion University in Virginia, before retiring at age 72. He was involved in consulting, research and advising. He earned many distinguished teaching awards, including a two time recipient of Faculty of the Year award by Delta Sigma Pi and Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the Year.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Geetha Solomon; younger daughter, Sashi Solomon (Dr. Kevin Eck) and grandchildren, Samuel and Serena Eck, all of Cedar Rapids; elder daughter, Nimmi Solomon of San Francisco; three brothers, Mohan (Soundari) Solomon of Des Moines, Nihal (Vasantha) Solomon of Toronto and Rajkumar (Suganthi) Solomon of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
