Dr. Roger Russell Anderson, 69, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Roger was born Dec. 3, 1944, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Russell and Grace (Arends) Anderson. He graduated from Hartley High School in 1963. Roger attended the University of Iowa, and while he was working on his undergraduate degree he accepted a position as a student employee in February 1966.
He was a member of the student government at the University of Iowa. Roger received his bachelor's degree in 1967, his master's in 1969 and lastly, his Ph.D. in 1976. He worked in the Department of Physics and Astronomy for eight years.
Roger was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma. He was working on a satellite project called Helios 1&2 and many other satellite projects like ISEE 1&2, CRRES, AMPTE, Firewheel, Geotail and Polar. He spent a lot of time traveling to Europe, Japan and all over the world on projects and attending meetings. Roger married Barbel "Babs" Prasse on Oct. 24, 1976, in Hartley, Iowa.
Roger was a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and International Radio Science Union (URSI). Later in life he enjoyed working with the Republican Party election campaigns and assisting with the polls.
Roger is survived by his loving wife, "Babs"; two children, Yasmin Choudhury of Orlando, Fla., and Torun Choudhury of Iowa City; twin brother, Raymond (Nancy) Anderson of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Carol (Gale) Bobolz of Sioux City; two nephews, Jason Anderson of Plano, Texas, and Bradley Bobolz of Lincoln, Neb.; a niece, Angela Bobolz of Sioux City; and many cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents.
