Dr. Justin C. Dunn, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at The Woodlands at The Meth-Wick Community. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. David Beckman. Inurn-ment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Survivors include his sons, David (Julie) Dunn of Virginia and Greg (Wendy) Dunn of Cedar Rapids; their mother, Millie Dunn of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jason Dunn, Lisa (Justin) Worrell, Whitney (Eliot) Weiner and Robert Dunn; and five great-grand-children, Summer, Aidan and Reid Dunn and Kaitlyn and Abigail Worrell.
Justin was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, James and John; an infant daughter, Mary; and his beloved sister, Mary Evelyn Dunn.
Justin was born July 1, 1921, near Elkader, Iowa, the son of Thomas C. and Grace (Looney) Dunn. He graduated from Loras College and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He was married to Mildred Golinvaux in 1944, and together they raised four boys. Justin served two tours stateside as a dentist in the U.S. Navy before and during the Korean conflict, and during this time, played on the Navy golf team.
Upon his return to Cedar Rapids, Justin purchased the practice owned by Dr. Byron McKeeby, the model for the farmer with the pitchfork in the famed American Gothic painting by Grant Wood. Dr. Dunn loved the practice of dentistry and treasured the great friendships he maintained with so many of his patients throughout his years of practice in Cedar Rapids, which spanned about 50 years.
Even now, more than 25 years after his retirement, his family members are still greeted by former patients who remember Justin not only as a superb dentist, but a kind, caring and generous health care provider.
Justin spent many happy hours with his family, and his sons and their families describe him as a superb father, grandfather, and great-grandfather – roles he cherished.
For many years he enjoyed the company of his great longtime friends, Dr. John Roalson and Carl Nelson. Together these three spent many years fishing, hunting and playing golf and bridge.
In recent years, Justin valued spending time with his great friend and golf partner, Marge Jacobs, who was a lively and positive force in his life.
Justin will be remembered by his family and many friends as a warm, kind, generous and fun-loving man, always quick with a smile and full of encouragement and praise for the accomplishments of others.
Memorials are suggested to St. Matthew Catholic Church.
