JAMES "DEREK" HOOD Cedar Rapids Dr. James "Derek" Hood was born in Preston, Lan-cashire, England, on May 27, 1957, to Dr. James and Margaret (Goodman) Hood. The family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, when Derek was a child as a result of his father accepting a position at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Derek grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School. Derek then received a bachelor's degree in microbiology from Northwestern University. Derek was then accepted to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1983 as an MD. He wed Kristine Boitman on May 21, 1983, at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Following a honeymoon in Florida, the couple moved to Chicago, where Derek completed his residence in radiology. From Chicago the couple moved to West Bloomfield, Mich., where Derek accepted a Fellowship in CT/MRI at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Derek and Kris were then delighted to welcome their only child, James "Brandon" Hood. The threesome next moved to Midland, Mich., where Derek worked as a radiologist at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center as a member of Midland Radiology, PC. After over 25 years of radiology practice, Derek passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at the family's Lake Michigan house. Derek will be greatly missed by his wife, Kris; son, Brandon; and his faithful companion and pet, Rody. Also surviving Derek are his mother, Margaret F. Hood, Midland, Mich.; sister, Lesley of Dusseldorf, Germany; uncle, Sandy of Scotland; uncle, George of West Vancouver, B.C., Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Siobahn and Moira of Germany. Derek was predeceased in death by his father, James Hood, M.D., on Oct. 8, 2004; and both sets of grandparents, aunts and uncles. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, Midland, Mich., with the Rev. Wallace Mayton III officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
