He was born Feb. 3, 1936, in Ames, Iowa, to Dr. Guy E. McFarland II and Margaret (McCulley) McFarland. He was a 1954 graduate of Ames High School and went on to study zoology at Iowa State University. He completed his medical degree at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and completed a residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa.
Terry served for two years in the U.S. Army, including a one year tour in Vietnam, working as an Army surgeon taking care of wounded soldiers and local civilians with ear/nose/throat disease. He was awarded a Bronze Star medal and was honorably discharged in 1968 with a rank of Major.
Terry moved back to Iowa City after his service and went into otolaryngology practice until his retirement in 2005. He served as an adjunct professor, training resident surgeons at the University and VA Hospitals.
Outside of work, his main pastime was running, completing dozens of marathons including 17 Boston Marathons and one Ironman Triathlon in 1980. He also enjoyed pottery, photography, fishing, farming, collecting watches, Iowa wrestling, track and field, and drinking excellent wine.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Barnes); children, Kristin, Grant, Andrew and Katie White (Matt); stepson, Ryan Eckhoff (Melissa); grandchildren, Mia, Neal, Rachel, Evan, Roan, Maggie and Lucy; and his brother, David.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; and his son, Guy IV.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at the Kirkwood Room.
