Dr. Charles Wesley Daniel, 89, of Anamosa, passed away peacefully at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family requests that you dress casually in Carolina blue or Hawkeye black and gold.
He is survived by his wife, Carole; brother-in-law, Rocky O'Deen; and three sons, Charles (Janet) Daniel Jr. of Athens, Tenn., Dr. Hugh (Annette) Daniel of Whiteville, N.C., and Jon (Angela) Daniel of Barnwell, S.C. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special great-niece who he affectionately called "Peanut," Maggie Rose O'Deen; and his mini dachshund, Tuff E Nuff.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Hugh Sydney Daniel.
Charles was born in Franklinton, N.C., to Hugh and Eunice (Gordon) Daniel, on Aug. 26, 1926. He attended Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University. Charles then joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. Upon discharge, he attended and graduated from Southern College of Optometry. Dr. Daniel practiced in Elizabethtown, Raleigh and Canton, N.C., for over 50 years. He married Carole O'Deen on Dec. 3, 1999. Dr. Daniel retired from his optometry practice and they moved to Anamosa in 2000.
His favorite expression: "Tar Heel born, Tar Heel bred and when I die, I'm Tar Heel dead."
His family would like to express their special thanks to the staff at the Mercy Medical Center and the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House for the care Dr. Daniel received.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
