Dr. Allen Berndt, 103, passed away at Cottage Grove Place on Friday, Nov, 25, 2022.
A private graveside service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Garden of Eternal Love.
Allen was born on July 22, 1919, in Tripp, S.D. He was the son of the late Emmanuel and Bertha (Wormsbecker) Berndt. He attended the University of South Dakota and the Loyola School of Medicine. On April 11, 1943, Allen married the love of his life, Thelma Broyles in Chicago, Ill. Allen was a veteran in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a major in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was one of the first anesthesiologists when he arrived in Cedar Rapids in the early ’50s and worked at both local hospitals before his retirement. He was a lifetime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Those left to cherish Allen’s memory are his children, Richard Berndt of Swisher, Iowa, and Barbara Skrdla of Las Vegas, Nev.; two grandchildren, Matthew Berndt of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Kelly (Andre) Johnson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Westminster Presbyterian Church and/or the Cedar Rapids Mercy Hospital Foundation.
