Douglas John McCallum, 53, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, at home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque, with the Rev. Dianne Grace officiating. Family and friends may visit from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date.
Doug was born March 30, 1963, the son of John and Glatha (Rorah) McCallum. He graduated from Marion High School in 1981 and attended Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. Doug met Jean (Flowers) DeStefano on Sept. 15, 1987, and they got married Sept. 15, 2001, on their 14-year anniversary.
He started working for the city of Dubuque, City Channel 8 in 1985 and did video production there for 22 years before retiring. He was a former member of Dubuque County Search and Rescue and the Mighty Mississippi Hog Chapter.
Doug was an avid dragon boater and was everyone's favorite sternsman. He served and was a member of the Dubuque Dragon Boat Association Board for 28 years. He was known as the "man of many hats." He also enjoyed a good game of pool and played Tuesday night League for 30 years. Doug loved to travel, camp, kayak and spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He also coached his daughter, Jamie, in the Special Olympics and was one of her biggest supporters. Doug was a handyman who could fix almost anything. He loved to help people. His friendship and generosity toward the people he knew will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Erin (Tom) Henneberry of New Vienna and Jamie Flowers of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Marissa and Kyle Henneberry and Seth and Alyssa Owen; a sister, Becky (Whiskers McDermott) McCallum; nieces, Tami (Wes) Dauburt and Teri (Larry) Shellenberger, both of Colorado; an aunt, Jeanette Rstom of Cedar Rapids; and many cousins and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David McCallum; a sister, Linda Carr; his grandparents; mother- and father-in-law, Richard and Chloe DeStefano; uncle, George Rstom; and two cousins, Rory and Rick Rstom.
In lieu of flowers, all memorials will be given to Special Olympics.
