Doug was born March 17, 1938, to Frank and Ellen (Mulvihill) Zangerle in a box car on a farm in the Hopkinton and Delhi area. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Monticello. After that he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne. He was united in marriage to Colleen Burke in 1966, and he continued to dance with her up until three weeks before the end of his life.
